Art group projects

COVID-19 DISTANCE ART CLASS PHOTO PROJECTS HERE

A little gallery of completed work from a group where we’ve had between 3-15 kids between the ages of 7-16 working on these projects. What fun it is!

My aim is to choose projects that all kids can feel a real sense of achievement from.

One of the most meaningful moments I had with these kids came from a 13 year old who said:

You know why I love art?
Because you think you can’t do something,
and then – you can!”

Made my day. And my art year. And makes the time taken to choose projects – so very worth it!

Our art ‘room’ has two rules.

1.No ‘down’ talk of their own work
2.If you notice Mrs Mc has gone quiet – it ever-so-politely means “shut up” so please shoosh each other so we can get on with it.

And once instructions are given and work is underway, we pop on a Spotify playlist that all have contributed to. Two more rules with this. Well, three.

1.We dont skip someone elses song.
2.If the chat gets too loud, the music goes off.
3. No rubbishing someone elses song choice.

One of the AWESOMEST things ever is these kids NEVER down talk anyone elses work – and I didn’t teach them that. They encourage and complement each other all the time. Maaaan I love that. And them 🙂

Enjoy looking around – use the ideas (most of them aren’t mine anyway), check out my Pinterest (I have a gazillion more ideas saved there) and I’d love to hear if you use any of the ideas you see here!

2019

More to be loaded througout the year

It is my current plan to move through some of the major art movements in history as the inspiration for the rest of the years art projects. Please note the word ‘inspiration’ as the projects will often not be entirely typical to the period although we will have discussed what is typical to the period!

Also please note that we will deviate with other projects now and then that bear no connection to the historical art movements!

DEVIATION POST!

Accidental art and Experimental art post HERE

DEVIATION POST!

This section isn’t technically our art group, but rather our ‘Book Club’ group! Four kids learning zentangle (plus which keeping hands busy) while I read a novel aloud with them. We’re all enjoying reading “Kensukes Kingdom” (so much so that I have to stop myself from reading ahead without the crew). And here’s what the kids’ve been turning out! I love seeing how differently the kids work turns out to be from the same set of instuctions!

You can see other simple zentangle ideas here, saved on my Pinterest.

iv) Roman art
500 b.c.– a.d. 476

This project involved many processes including the mixing and pouring plaster of Paris onto hessian squares, painting fresco style, sealing, smashing and antiquing.

Voila! Instant artefacts unearthed at that ancient Roman dig in Parkerville, Western Australia!

iii) Greek & Hellenistic art
850 BC – 31 BC

The word Hellenistic comes from the root word Hellas, which was the ancient Greek word for Greece and refers to a time when the Greek culture started to influence other cultures after the death of Alexander the Great.

Watch a 3 minute youtube clip on Greek art here (vetted 🙂 )

This project involved designing a potentially Greek coin on paper and then embossing on a piece of “shim”.

iii) Mesapotamian & Egyptian art – as inspiration only!
Mesopotamian 3500 BC–539 BC
Egyptian 3100–30BC

View 6 minute clip on Kahn Academy here

Instead of the usual Egyptian style project, we used that as a springboard to a different kind of sybolism – “Hobo Symbols”. Apparently the late 1920’s saw huge numbers of people in the USA displaced from their homes and a system of symbols was developed to communicate to others coming behind. For instance a cat represented a kind hearted lady… another to warn the jail was not worth commiting petty crime to find a meal or dry place to sleep, or where work for a meal could be bartered. The kids drew fences and flowers and chose symbols to represent their families.

i) Stone Age/Ancient/Cave art
Pre 2500 BC

EASTER POSTERS

Kids were asked to choose a Bible verse and an object to illustrate their verse. They then drew it as simply as possible, dunked in an edacol dyle paint bath, placed on a white card and photographed, uploaded to computer, chose a border and font for their verse – and then I had printed in A3 size at Officeworks. There are two lots here – aren’t they wonderful?

ART GAME – Kids had 1 minute to draw an element from a sample chart anywhere on their page, then “time” was called and they moved around to the next sample list.

ANGEL WINGS
GLUE GUN ON MDF – PAINTED AND ANTIQUED

PAUL KLEE INSPIRED

The kids walked around a beautiful garden and then drew their recollection of the layout with their eyes shut. They had studied samples of Paul Klee’s work which contains lots of whimsical elements such as fish and circus items.. Look closely… this is one of my favourite projects.

ACCIDENTAL ART

I encourage the kids to look for beauty and interest in all manner of places. They are all now prone to calling out “ACCIDENTAL ART” at random times. LOVE IT!

These were part of a science experiment. Strips of ink soaking an edge in water, when lifted left some ink suspended in the water. Beautiful! (We may have spent more time on this than the actual experiment 🙂 )

OOBLEC (Cornflour, water, colouring)

This was a sample drawing of my own that I didn’t like. I used it as a table protector under something else I painted but then loved the end result. Another happy accident.

BONUS PIECE by 4 year old grandson.

When I asked him to “tell me about” the portion at the bottom of the page he explained it was the pipes under the house 🙂 (His dad is a plumber 🙂 🙂 )
