What if we begin to see the places the words of our mouths and the revealed attitudes of our hearts are less than consistent…
What if in fear – we learn to go to God…
What if in sorrow, we learn to lament…

Continue reading “Some What-Ifs”Summer has just turned the page; autumn is a lovely read – but the march of winter cometh and it depresseth me. ‘The Winter Project’ is at attempt to learn and incorporate the ideas of winter lovers, or those with experience of much harsher conditions into my own home and outlook. Some friends sent me ideas last winter, and the year before – such simple ideas can make such a difference. The favourite ideas so far revolve around fairy lights and scented candles. And so – the preparations begin. If you have ideas for me – please send them!
Continue reading “The Winter Project – Prelude”A week ago a friend in her 60’s caring for her elderly mum along with her sister, told me how the mums behaviour was changing and making life for all very difficult, but that something that had come to the surface was that the sisters were being set up against each other and how this current behaviour revealed that the mum had done this from their enitre lives… a whole range of situations had now been brought into the light of new information and understanding.
I have wrangled many times with the verse “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world“… and in case there’s any doubt, I do absolutely believe in the actual existence of a being known as many names, including Satan, and that he’s had thousands of years to hone and implement a zillion strategies against humans. Why against humans? Well for one thing, when evil doesn’t get what it wants, it sets about the poisoning and ruin of anything good or pure – for hates own sake and for the purpose of revenge against the One in Whose throne he desires to sit.
Don’t panic – I’m not comparing that elderly mum to Satan – what I am saying though is that through many difficult situations in life I have not been able to see past a current conflict and apply how that verse makes sense. I remember discussing a situation with my sister about 20 years back “but we DO! We DO wrestle with each other!!” And it’s true… we do… but since thinking about that friend from last week I see a slightly wider view… there is a someone who is good at remaining hidden, when he finds he cannot have he can’t have our adulation, adoration or worship – is very strategic and utterly unfair, striking at our most vulnerable moments – and will actively set out to steal, kill, rob, destroy, devour and decimate.
If we will not worship him – he will set about souring our worship of the Saviour in malicious ways using relationships and circumstances in myriad ways. And because we’re often not wise to his strategies – he can make ground.
We can attribute too much to the devil.
We can also attribute too little.
So soft that only the heart can hear he whispers fear and lies, mistrust and misunderstanding, deceit and power in many shades from his place in the shadows. Perhaps remembering he is about the destruction of lives, families and worship – and will pit people against each other by whatever means – is a place to start getting wiser.
Has he been stirring your pot?
Assumptions are beliefs we don’t think about but do act upon. They are a hidden or subconscious thoughts from which our attitudes, actions, behaviour or decisions can be made.

Oh Lord – he’s 10.
He’s 10 with a broken brain.
Can you mend a 10 year old broken brain?
Of course you can. I know that. But will you?
Would you?
Oh Lord he’s 10.
Or 11.
Maybe he was 10 when he did it and 11 now.
But his brain got broken a long time ago.
This doesn’t just ‘happen’
Are you in the business of mending broken brains?
Sometimes I don’t think so.
But what if that’s because we only see the ones that didn’t get mended.
– or haven’t yet.
What if you’ve mended more brains that we could ever know
Because we haven’t seen the effects of the brokenness?
Oh Lord, he’s 10. Or 11.
Does it even matter?
You Who dwells outside of our now – do you see the man he ‘is’ in a simple pivot of the line of time? Is he a monster? Is he fixable?
Oh Lord – a broken boy.
Please God might you mend him?
Might you put your people around him to help him heal?
Would you protect others in the now, and in the future, from the spread of this specific sadness?
Would you?
Oh Lord he’s 10.
So many fearful others, so sure of the ‘should haves’.
And would I be too in their position?
Oh Lord – the other broken boy.
Heal, protect, love, tear down, build up, surround and restore.
How long oh Lord.
How long.
He’s 8.
Oh Lord.
Written after one boy abused another at a local school.
A very angry friend once said to me “Is the word ‘encouragement’ even in your vocabulary?”
I was floored.
Continue reading “Hurt but Helped”Reasons God doesn’t answer our prayers. The standard human responses to that question are that He will answer with either a ‘yes’, a ‘no’, or a ‘wait’. There have been many prayers I’ve prayed that I have not seen the answers I desired to see. Many. Some I have still not reached a place of peace about… either because someone I love died, or because I’m still currently waiting and hoping.

SEE
1
See yourself.
See yourself standing in your spot on the planet.
See yourself in your spot on the planet
as a singular dot existing in a sphere of time.
See your dot on the planet in the sphere of time within another sphere
called “the lower heavens”.
See your dot on the planet in its place in time in the lower heavens
in the never-ending multi-dimension called eternity.
I remember learning in school that there were five senses. Just lately I’ve read a couple of things suggesting that there are way MORE than five. The five we know… sight, touch, taste, smell, hearing…
Continue reading “The box is too small”I so love the conversations that come out of kids stories. Tonight we read a new one – “The Very Cranky Bear” – bought entirely to see if it represented the Bear in our own house 🙂
