Detox

There are both similarities and differences between a dietary detox and a spiritual one. They’re both beneficial. They can both have uncomfortable results before reaching the benefits and they can both lead to new places of understanding.

Most people enter a dietary detox through need or recognition of the benefits and by choice but most times in my observation, we get thrust into the spiritual sort without much warning OR wanting!

Big life changes, griefs and disappointments can all strip us back to bare bones. They can leave us reeling and lop sided – certain we are getting along sideways while the axis of the earth has somehow tipped.

In my own experience, these times of spiritual detox have been of immense benefit but I had to walk into the wind and allow a whole bunch of stuff to be stripped away. Much like when Aslan peels the dragons skin off Eustace. It hurts. It bleeds. It is a kind of death.

But out of that death comes something new that could never have emerged without the peeling away of the old.

If you’re in the midst of a spiritual detox, I pray you’ll know the comfort of the One who knows and can use it for the purpose of new life. He isn’t far away – even though it might feel that way.

I’ve had the strange experience of peering into incredible sorrow AND knowing His kindness at the very same time. I pray if you only see the first right now, that He’ll help you see the second also. Terror or sorrow and much unknown – hand in hand with beauty.

Like swimming face down eyes wide open
On top of a vast emerald ocean
Knowing I cannot see far
Into countless fathoms below
Is your kindness.
