Sludge

Picture someone you like/love/want to help.

You see worth and value in them.
You want to do what you can.

Then you look down and notice their feet are stuck in a sticky black substance but you still see their worth (more than the sludge) and you know you’ve got ‘stuff’ too so you’re undaunted.

Then you see their hand reaching for you and you go to reach back but somehow you see the sludge is up to their knees.

A shape to your left moves but you ignore it.

Your fingers touch and they grip on to you but you see the sludge is up to their waist and their eyes are locked on yours for help. You feel the strength of the sludge that binds them to the spot and you dont know know if your strength will be enough to pull them out… but you see their worth and you want to help… but the sludge is now on your toes, and their grip feels like death, and their eyes are full of desperation.

Pause.

You’re noticing many things.

You are confused.

Afraid? – Certainly being cautioned.

You want to help but what if you sink too?
Isn’t it selfish to think of self rather than help?
What what if you’re not strong enough?

The shape to your left moves again.

The shape is a Man.
The Man is strong.
The Man is unafraid.
The Man is poised for action but the one in the sludge is looking at YOU not at Him.
The Man is waiting to be looked to.

  • Are you going to go into the sludge?
  • Are you looking to the One who can help without sinking?
  • Are you going to point to the One that the other actually needs?

Who is the one – that the one in the sludge – will look to look for future rescue/strength/help after they’re out from this mess?

We can be the helper who points – and plays a vital role.

We can be the ‘rescuer’ who obscures or diverts from the One who is atually able.
