When I did my cooking apprenticeship, there were quite a lot of European women that worked there as kitchen hands and cooks… sometimes I hear things they used to say in their voices and accents (given a reason to).
Often if asked how she was – one lady I remember would reply – heavily accented – “Soon be Christmas!”
I never really ‘got it’ at the time. But my Dad also has a saying of similar meaning (now I’ve thought about it) which is – “All be the same in a 100 years”.
I don’t know if Phil Baker first said it, but I do remember him saying “the only true constant, is change”.
And perhaps a more poetic version of them all is perhaps – “and this too, shall pass”.
